The Netherlands may be one of the smallest countries in Europe, no larger than the US state of Maryland, but it is certainly the most densely populated and the flattest - half of the country lies at or below sea level. With a liberal and tolerant tradition, the Netherlands’ population of 17 million enjoys one of the highest standards of living and lowest levels of unemployment in Europe. One of the primary reasons for this is the significant level of foreign investment entering the country. The Netherlands is home to a growing number of large, multi-national companies that are creating an increasing number of opportunities for foreign workers, with certain skills being in higher demand than others. Indeed, the demand is so great for so-called ‘knowledge workers’ - engineering, marketing, IT, banking and finance, healthcare and management - that the Dutch government has introduced a fast-track immigration process to help attract key workers. Aside from the demand for knowledge workers, a number of other employment opportunities also exist within the services sector - transportation, financial and professional services being the biggest employers, accounting for 80% of all jobs in the Netherlands.
